"The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God." - Gabriel, Luke 1:35

Gabriel's greeting confounded, troubled and frightened Mary. Was his news good news or bad news? On the one hand an unexpected pregnancy could certainly throw some cold water on the hopes and dreams of a young virgin. On the other hand, Gabriel's promise about a son who would be called Yeshua (Yah Saves) and Son of the Most High and who would reign on David's throne forever might sound pretty good to a young woman living in a fallen world under foreign oppression. Perhaps angel messages, God's messages, are often like that: good news for us and for all people, but not without their inconveniences.

Saturday is the last chance for Saturday evening Praise service this year!
If you like this kind of service, please join us. If you are simply curious, please join us!

"The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father." - Jesus, Matthew 13:37-43

The Harvest is the End of the World as performed by Charlie Peacock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3d9VVc-StM&feature=related

Rachel, why do you weep?
Why do you bury your face in you hands?
Is there no one who would reach you?
Is there no one who understands?

There is no one to comfort her, (there is no one to comfort her)
For her children are no more, and there is no one to comfort her.

Rachel, why do you cry?
Why do you hide your trembling lips?
Are those tears stains on your brow?
Are those tears on your fingertips?

There is no one to comfort her, (there is no one to comfort her)
For her children are no more, and there is no one to comfort her.

Now and always, Now and evermore,
Now and always, Now and evermore.

I see angels in the distance,
In the distance, I see angels, and their shadows fall like crosses on the fields,
Some are swinging low the sickles, some are binding up the sheaves,
Some are sifting out the harvest yield,
Rachel, run to join the angels in the harvest in the distance, rising from your bed as from a dream,
In the faint and splintered line where the wheat field meets the sky, you might find your sorrow made complete,
You might find your sorrow made complete.

Now and always, Now and evermore,
Now and always, Now and evermore,
Redemption is the harvest of the tears that came before,
Now and always, Now and evermore.

All who sorrow with her, lift your heads,
You might hear the sound of Rachel gently weeping, for the gathering is done and her children have come home,
Whom she counted lost and dead, now to find were sweetly sleeping in the fields where angels have been reaping.

I see angels in the distance,
In the distance, I see angels, and their shadows fall like crosses on the fields,
Some are swinging low their sickles, some are binding up the sheaves,
Some are sifting out the harvest yield,
Rachel, run to join the angels in the harvest in the distance, rising from your bed as from a dream,
In the faint and splintered line where the wheat field meets the sky, you might find your sorrow made complete,
You might find your sorrow made complete.

Now and always, Now and evermore,
Now and always, Now and evermore,
Redemption is the harvest of the tears that came before,
Now and always, Now and evermore,
Now and always, Now and evermore,
Redemption is the harvest of the tears that came before,
Now and always, Now and evermore,
Now and always, Now and evermore.

Africa International University Granted Kenyan Charter as a “Mark of Quality”
Africa International University received its charter on March 4, 2011, in a festive celebration presided over by Mwai Kibaki, C.G.H., M.P., president and commander-in-chief of the defense forces of Kenya. It is only the thirteenth private university in Kenya to have attained full accreditation status. In his speech Kibaki congratulated “all those who have made this possible. I especially commend the sponsors for their immense efforts which have culminated in the actualization of their dream of a university.” He described the charter as “a mark of quality,” for AIU “already has a rich history.” The president praised AIU for being “at the forefront in providing post-graduate theological training to Christian leaders in Kenya and the African continent,” noting, “Many of the inspiring and effective Protestant leaders in Africa have been trained in this institution. You have played an important role in ensuring that the men and women who serve in our churches are equipped with necessary ministry skills. I am confident that the award of this charter will help towards making this institution a world-renowned university that serves humanity.”
During the same ceremony Watson Omulokoli, professor of church history in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Kenyatta University, was installed as the AIU chancellor. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Mission, and Culture, Akropong-Akuapem, Ghana. In 2006–8 he was a member of
the Task Force for the Development of the National Strategy for University Education in Kenya.
Omulokoli also is patron of Bible Translation and Literacy East Africa, the national counterpart of Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and is chairman of the trustee board of the African Institute for Contemporary Mission and Research. He was a 2010–11 resident at the Overseas Ministries Study Center (publisher of the IBMR), where he wrote profiles for the Dictionary of African Christian Biography. Negotiations to relocate the DACB’s research coordinating hub to AIU are underway. The database itself will be hosted at the Boston University School of Theology. Omulokoli pledged that AIU would be committed to “offer quality education with integrity” by maintaining “academic and intellectual excellence,” laying strong spiritual foundations, and pursuing its mandate of moral and ethical integrity in all its programs.
Later, AIU also announced the appointment of Andrew F. Walls as research professor in world Christianity in its Centre for World Christianity.
Walls is professor of the history of missions, Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool, England; honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh and founder and former director of the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World there; and an IBMR contributing editor. The appointment will commence in September 2011.
The university comprises three schools: the Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, an “evangelical post-graduate theological institution to promote excellence in African Christianity”; the Institute for the Study of African Realities; and the School of Professional Studies. "Everything of God gets expressed in [Christ], so you can see and hear him clearly. You don't need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. When you come to him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything." (the Message, Colossians 2:9-10)

John 141Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 4And you know the way to the place where I am going." 5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" 6Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him."
8Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." 9Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

Why might the disciples have been troubled? (14:1; cf. 13:36) What is troubling you today?

Why does Jesus call himself the Way? What other ways have people tried to follow or walk on?

Why does Jesus call himself the Truth? Is there a single truth? Does it make a difference that truth is a person and not a statement? Where do you go to find the truth?

Why does Jesus call himself the Life?

What other ways do people try to get to Jesus' Father?

How does Jesus recommend that we "see" the Father?

Do you think 14:13-14 give us a blank check with God? I.e. that God will do whatever we might want at the moment?

Looking at the passage as a whole, what is the purpose of Jesus' promise to answer prayers?

John 2019When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
24But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe."
26A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." 28Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" 29Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."
30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

How does Jesus greet the disciples on Easter night? (vv 19, 21, 26)

What does Jesus' peace mean for you?

What do Jesus' breath and the Holy Spirit have to do with each other? (v 22)

How can we receive the Holy Spirit today?

What call did Jesus give to His disciples? (v 23)

Do we as a church and congregation have a similar call? How do we exercise it?

How did the other disciples evangelize Thomas? (v 25)

What are some of the doubts you have or have had about Jesus, the Bible and Christianity? How do you deal with those doubts?

How did Jesus "prove" His resurrection to Thomas? (v 27)

Why do you believe in Jesus' bodily resurrection? If you don't believe it, what could convince you? How could you convince your unbelieving friends and family that Jesus is really risen from the dead?

What does Thomas call Jesus? (v 27)

What is the goal of this scene and of John's gospel in general? (v 31)

Living Last Supper, Tonight!

Join us tonight (Maundy Thursday, April 21) at 7:30pm for the dramatic, musical experience, "The Living Last Supper," in which members of our congregation and community portray Jesus and His 12 disciples on the night before His death. Our choir and a small orchestra will lead us through the drama with beautiful music. We will conclude the evening with a brief service of Holy Communion and the stripping of the altar. See you then!

"Behold! Whom? The Bridegroom. Behold him! How? Like a lamb.
Behold! What? Behold his patience. Behold! Where? Behold our guilt.
Behold Him, out of love and graciousness, Himself carrying the wood of the cross."

John 111Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, he whom you love is ill." 4But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." 5Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
7Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again." 8The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?" 9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. 10But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them." 11After saying this, he told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him." 12The disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right." 13Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. 14Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead. 15For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." 16Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."
17When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, 19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him." 23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." 25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" 27She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world."
28When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." 29And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." 35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" 37But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"
38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." 40Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.

What shows you in these verses that Jesus had genuine care for Lazarus and his sisters?

Why did Jesus not come immediately and heal his friend Lazarus? (vv. 4, 15)

How successful was Jesus in consoling Martha and Mary? When you grieve how do you want Jesus to console you? How do you want your friend to console you?

Why do you think Jesus was so disturbed by these events? (vv. 33, 38)

How do you think Lazarus felt by being raised from the dead?
