Are there devils among us? . . . even in places of worship, where God's Word is read and preached? Our task as a Christian church is to continually re-orient ourselves to the words and life of our prophet, Jesus, while being cautiously, but not obsessively, aware of devils and deceitful teaching which would diminish our trust in Him and His Word.

"Go, stand in the temple and tell the people the whole message about this life." (Acts 5:20)

As the angel saved the apostles from prison, he reiterated Jesus' commission, "Go... tell the people..." (Acts 5:20) As a congregation, we do that in our day-to-day lives, in our worship services and special programs and through wider partnerships, including that with Gloria Sauck, who has brought the gospel to the Samburu people in word and deed (and song) for nearly 20 years. Join us this weekend as we celebrate her ministry and encourage her to continue telling the people "the whole message."

Praise service is on! Join us this Saturday at 5:30pm for some happening tunes and God's Word!

After worship on Sunday morning, Gloria will share with us about her life, work and ministry. After that, we'll eat a potluck meal together. Don't miss this opportunity to get to know her better!

"The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God." - Gabriel, Luke 1:35

Gabriel's greeting confounded, troubled and frightened Mary. Was his news good news or bad news? On the one hand an unexpected pregnancy could certainly throw some cold water on the hopes and dreams of a young virgin. On the other hand, Gabriel's promise about a son who would be called Yeshua (Yah Saves) and Son of the Most High and who would reign on David's throne forever might sound pretty good to a young woman living in a fallen world under foreign oppression. Perhaps angel messages, God's messages, are often like that: good news for us and for all people, but not without their inconveniences.

Africa International University Granted Kenyan Charter as a “Mark of Quality”
Africa International University received its charter on March 4, 2011, in a festive celebration presided over by Mwai Kibaki, C.G.H., M.P., president and commander-in-chief of the defense forces of Kenya. It is only the thirteenth private university in Kenya to have attained full accreditation status. In his speech Kibaki congratulated “all those who have made this possible. I especially commend the sponsors for their immense efforts which have culminated in the actualization of their dream of a university.” He described the charter as “a mark of quality,” for AIU “already has a rich history.” The president praised AIU for being “at the forefront in providing post-graduate theological training to Christian leaders in Kenya and the African continent,” noting, “Many of the inspiring and effective Protestant leaders in Africa have been trained in this institution. You have played an important role in ensuring that the men and women who serve in our churches are equipped with necessary ministry skills. I am confident that the award of this charter will help towards making this institution a world-renowned university that serves humanity.”
During the same ceremony Watson Omulokoli, professor of church history in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Kenyatta University, was installed as the AIU chancellor. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Mission, and Culture, Akropong-Akuapem, Ghana. In 2006–8 he was a member of
the Task Force for the Development of the National Strategy for University Education in Kenya.
Omulokoli also is patron of Bible Translation and Literacy East Africa, the national counterpart of Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and is chairman of the trustee board of the African Institute for Contemporary Mission and Research. He was a 2010–11 resident at the Overseas Ministries Study Center (publisher of the IBMR), where he wrote profiles for the Dictionary of African Christian Biography. Negotiations to relocate the DACB’s research coordinating hub to AIU are underway. The database itself will be hosted at the Boston University School of Theology. Omulokoli pledged that AIU would be committed to “offer quality education with integrity” by maintaining “academic and intellectual excellence,” laying strong spiritual foundations, and pursuing its mandate of moral and ethical integrity in all its programs.
Later, AIU also announced the appointment of Andrew F. Walls as research professor in world Christianity in its Centre for World Christianity.
Walls is professor of the history of missions, Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool, England; honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh and founder and former director of the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World there; and an IBMR contributing editor. The appointment will commence in September 2011.
The university comprises three schools: the Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, an “evangelical post-graduate theological institution to promote excellence in African Christianity”; the Institute for the Study of African Realities; and the School of Professional Studies. Get ready for Panda Mania! Pray that our children would know and trust Jesus!

Vacation Bible School
Bethany/Messiah Vacation Bible School will be held Tuesday – Friday, May 31-June 3, 9:00 - 11:30 am, at Bethany Church. Registration forms are available online and in the church offices. The curriculum, PandaMania, focused on Psalm 139, will be used.

The key points and stories are as follows:
Day 1 - Bible Point: God made you. Bible Story: God creates the world (Genesis 1).
Day 2 - Bible Point: God listens to you. Bible Story: Elijah confronts the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:16-39).
Day 3 - Bible Point: God watches over you. Bible Story: Jonah tries to escape from God (Jonah 1-3).
Day 4 - Bible Point: God loves you, no matter what. Bible Story: Jesus dies and comes back to life (Luke 23:1–24:12).

Theme Verse: “Lead me along the path of everlasting life” (Psalm 139:24).

There will be closing service/celebration on Sunday, June 5th, in North Park at 10:00 am. The worship service will end with a potluck dinner. We ask that you bring a dish to share and table service for your family plus chairs for the worship service. (Hot dogs will not be supplied this year, so please consider bringing a main dish.) Drinks will be provided. In case of inclement weather the service and lunch will be held at Bethany Church. Mark your calendars and join us for a great week.

24But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe."
26A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe." 28Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" 29Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."
30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Living Last Supper, Tonight!

Join us tonight (Maundy Thursday, April 21) at 7:30pm for the dramatic, musical experience, "The Living Last Supper," in which members of our congregation and community portray Jesus and His 12 disciples on the night before His death. Our choir and a small orchestra will lead us through the drama with beautiful music. We will conclude the evening with a brief service of Holy Communion and the stripping of the altar. See you then!

John 111Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, he whom you love is ill." 4But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." 5Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
7Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again." 8The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?" 9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. 10But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them." 11After saying this, he told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him." 12The disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right." 13Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. 14Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead. 15For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." 16Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."
17When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, 19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him." 23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." 25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" 27She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world."
28When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." 29And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." 35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" 37But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"
38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." 40Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.

"Hermeneutics of Suspicion
'Before we seek to score points against the genetic fallacies and ad hominem arguments of modern atheists, before we 'turn suspicion against the suspicious,' perhaps we ought to adopt self-suspicion 'as the hermeneutics of Lent.' We ought to consider the possibility that in our own religion, 'what presents itself as an altruistic virtue may be, in terms of motive and function, only an egoistic vice dressed up in its Sunday-go-to-meetin' clothes.' (Cornelius Plantinga Jr., Not the Way It's Supposed to Be: A Breviary of Sin, referencing Westphal, 'Taking Suspicion Seriously' - Eerdmans, 1995, p. 111)

In the summer of 2009, Rob Bell hosted Poets, Prophets, Preachers, a conference on reclaiming the art of the sermon. One presenter at the event, Peter Rollins, convenes an 'iconic' collective that offers experiments in transformance art, sometimes also called theodramatic events. The collective, called Ikon, defies easy or simple definition. However, it is fair to say that what they are up to, at least in part, is to offer a radical, postmodern form of worship for those on the margins of faith and the church. For our purposes, we consider one exercise Ikon engages in that can inform our Lenten worship preparations. They call it 'Atheism for Lent.' Each year, they read a book influenced by, or about, the prominent hermeneuts of suspicion: Feuerbach, Marx, Freud, and Nietzsche. This practice, though radical, resonates with Cornelius Plantinga's idea in Not the Way It's Supposed to Be, quoted above, and may be a fruitful approach to Lent in 2011.

Why? Because our own religion can easily become an egoistic vice dressed up in Sunday-go-to-meetin' clothes, and our own people, and especially our neighbors, know this. Pastors and church leaders are not unfamiliar with the critique that the church is full of hypocrites who act one way on Sunday and another way the rest of the week. And truthfully, even the leaders of the churches - are guilty of this. So Lent, the season of repentance, begins with a reminder of our profound sin and mortality (Ash Wednesday), and walks us all the way to a cross which, if we are honest, we recognize as the place where we crucified the Son of God. It is not at all out of place, during this time, to listen to those suspicious of religion, and suspicious of the church, precisely in order to encourage and develop our own self-suspicion.

There are other ways to exercise self-suspicion during Lent. One is to recommit to the practice of confession. Encourage regular corporate confession. Encourage regular corporate confession in the assembly, but also exercise the rite of individual confession and forgiveness. Being with yourself and your leadership. Do not encourage the members of the congregation to schedule time for individual confession and forgiveness if you have not first confessed yourself. Remember also to take small steps in this, because individual confession and forgiveness is a rite that has fallen into disuse in most of our churches, and so can be intimidating in even small doses. Teach it and discuss it in small groups and with key leaders. Ask a neighboring pastor to hear your confession if you are the sole pastor in a congregation. Find a monastic community or religious order that practices individual confession and find out whether opportunity is available to learn about and make use of the confessional. Seek out a neighboring pastor also if you feel uncomfortable confessing to your own pastor. And remember that all the baptized are welcome to hear confession and speak words of forgiveness."

This is taken from an article in the March issue of Lutheran Women Today. The article, Lenten Disciple─ing was written by Julie A. Kanarr who serves as co-pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Angeles, Washington. Her suggestions for Lent disciplines seemed to put a new spin on an old practice.

SERVING, NOT SUFFERING
Classic Lenten disciplines such as fasting, prayer, and almsgiving focus on identifying with Christ’s suffering on the cross through personal actions of devotion or deprivation. The ancient practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays is rooted in this idea. Given this, one might ask whether such acts as giving up chocolate trivializes the practice of mirroring Christ’s suffering. If you are planning to give something up for Lent, reflect on your motivation and the personal meaning for your choice. Will this be too easy for you? Will it be too difficult? Is this a form of repentance—of turning toward God? Are you trying to let go of a bad habit so that you might become a better steward of the gifts God has entrusted to you? Is it only a trivial deprivation of pleasure or is this a personally meaningful sacrifice or change in your life?

A carefully chosen Lenten discipline leads us to focus on our call to love God and serve our neighbors. Honest reflection can help us see how some disciplines can be more about serving than suffering. For instance, instead of giving up chocolate to identify with Christ’s sufferings through personal deprivation, you might give up desserts so that you can donate what you would have otherwise spent on treats to help those who are hungry, whether through the ELCA World Hunger Appeal or your local food bank.

Consider Lenten disciplines that combine saying no to one thing (such as watching television or going to the movies) in order to say yes to something else (such as Bible study, prayer, volunteering, building relationships with family). And ask yourself what that "yes" means for you.

Changing your leisure habits? How will you use your newfound time to serve God and neighbor? Changing your eating habits? How does this change your awareness of how God provides you with daily bread and the relationship between the food on your plate and God’s command to be caretakers of the land, ocean, and air, and to care for our hungry neighbors? Changing your spending habits? How does that deepen your understanding and practice of stewardship?

REFLECT AND WRITE
Let your Lenten discipline prompt questions for your ongoing reflection. To ask questions of meaning and purpose is a classic Lutheran practice, growing out of the “what does this mean” question repeatedly asked throughout Luther’s Small Catechism. You may wish to keep a personal Lenten journal to record your thoughts, questions, prayers, struggles, and reflections to be fancy. It doesn’t even need to consist of complete paragraphs. Don’t worry about your writing ability. Some might find it easier to draw or write down words or phrases instead of complete sentences.
As Lent draws to a close, spend time reflecting on questions such as: What have I discovered? What has this meant for me? How have I grown in my appreciation of God’s grace? How has this discipline of Lent engaged me in repentance, in prayer, in living out my faith, in serving my neighbor? And finally, where might this lead me in keeping Lent next year?

Lenten disciplines come to us with an invitation, but not a demand. Remember that God won’t love you more if you practice a Lenten discipline or love you less if you don’t. As we enter into the season of Lent, let us do so both with discipline and freedom, purpose and flexibility. Lent invites us to reflect deeply upon the gift of God’s grace.

Lent is a time for renewal, a time to focus on the gift of Christ’s death and resurrection, and to grow in our understanding of living as God’s beloved children.

Why do you think Jesus only took Peter, James and John up the mount of Transfiguration?

What does the Transfiguration signify? What difference does it make that Jesus is depicted here as a (or perhaps "the") source of light?

What does it mean to you personally that Jesus is certified by Moses and Elijah?

How might you listen to Jesus more than you already? Where do you go and what do you do to listen to Him? Is there a difference between "hearing" Him and "listening to" Him?

Do you fear Jesus? Why or why not? Is it a comfort to you that Jesus might want to touch you and tell you not to be afraid?

Why do you think Jesus did not want the three disciples to speak of the Transfiguration until after the Resurrection?

What is it that worries you most?

In these verses, Jesus gives at least five why shouldn't worry about food and clothing. Can you find at least that many?

How would your life be different if you didn't worry about money, food and clothing?

What does Jesus mean by "serving wealth"?

What does He mean by serving God? What does it meant to seek/strive for God's kingdom first?

Is it easy to believe that God will give us all we need if we but strive for God's kingdom first?

Does Jesus here contradict the OT law? If not, what is the significance of His interpretations?

Does the passage imply that human reconciliation a more important priority than worship? How do you prioritize reconciliation in your personal relationships?

What does it mean to "look at a woman [or at a man] with lust"? How might we "guard our hearts" from lust? How can we enlist Jesus' help in this endeavor?

Why do you think Jesus is so categorically opposed to divorce? In addition to the effect of divorce on divorced people, who else is effected by it? How can we strengthen marriage bonds as a way to decrease the incidence of divorce?

What do you like most to talk about? What would happen if we were all more circumspect in our choice of conversation topics? If we used our speech to bless others instead of cursing them; to praise God instead of binding Him?

What is the essence of the church? What is it that makes it a church? What is our saltiness?

What is your favorite beatitude?

Notice who the blessed are here: poor in spirit, the meek, those who mourn, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, the persecuted. Do you find yourself in any of those categories?

In the context of Matthew's own time, it seems likely that his congregation was experiencing alienation and persecution because of their stand to believe and trust in Jesus. How are you alienated from others or persecuted by them for your faith in Him?

Notice what the blessings are here: the kingdom of heaven (twice), comfort, the earth, being satisfied with God's righteousness, receiving mercy, seeing God, being called God's children. Do you consider these things to be blessings? Are they the things you value most highly?

Do you think the beatitudes are just "pie in the sky," i.e. a future reward for patient endurance in this life? If not, how should they be interpreted and understood? If so, how might this pie nourish and strengthen us? What things might it strengthen us to do here and now?

"For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands..." - Paul, 2 Timothy 1:6

Whether Paul is referring here to Timothy's baptism or to his ordination, he puts his finger on a spiritual phenomenon which is common to most of us who have known the Lord a long time. Sooner or later, our faith can grow cold and stale. We no longer have that flush of first love (Rev. 2:4); we no longer thrill to open God's Word or to gather with God's people to receive His body and blood or to pray together. There can be several causes for this kind of spiritual doldrums. One is simply the distance in time between now and our first realization of God's mercy "for me." Another is that we become disappointed that God does not respond to our prayers in the ways we wish. We sometimes become angry with God for the bad things that happen to us and our loved ones in this life. Paul himself suffered for the gospel and this may have been a source of shame to both Paul and his followers. Why wasn't the gospel always going onwards and upwards? Finally, Paul's letters to Timothy also present another kind of spiritual discouragement: many people in the name of religion or Christianity are preaching and teaching heresy, teaching not "sound doctrine" (2 Tim 1:13), but instead "myths," "doctrines that soothe itching ears," (2 Tim 4:3) and the "teachings of demons." (1 Tim 4:10)

What is the cure for spiritual discouragement? On the one hand, Paul assumes that we can do something about it: "rekindle the gift of God." He recommends "self-discipline." (2 Tim 1:7) However repugnant it might seem to us at a particular time, we ought to continue to expose ourselves to God's Word - to read the Bible daily and hear it preached at least weekly; we ought not give up on meeting with other Christians (Heb 10:25); we ought to continue to share in the Lord's Supper; and we ought to pray for the fire of Christ to grow again deep in our hearts. On the other hand, what Paul prescribes is not about you. Regardless of your feelings and experiences, your failures and questions and doubts, there is a God who loves you enough to send His Son to die on your behalf. (Jn 3:16) Let us not gauge the quality of God's love by our varying and vacillating receptions of it. Instead, let us recognize that the God who has called us to the Christian life has done so by His grace and purpose (2 Tim 1:9) and He will complete His work. (Phil 1:6) Amen.

will help us discuss Understanding and Preventing Child Suicide.
He'll be with parents and adults in the Fellowship Hall from 10:50-11:20 am
and with parents and children for the remainder of the hour.
